Company Information
Company Profile : A R Harris Worked With Thomas Edison In The Early 1900s. He Set Up Business In 1912 To Market Edison Storage Batteries. A R Harris Company Was Also Involved In The Establishment Of The Four Ya Radio Station Around 1925. The Company's Main Business Has Always Been The Marketing Of Electrical And Industrial Equipment To The Electrical Industry. We Have Maintained The Core Values That Have Made Us A Long And Successful Partner In The Electrical Industry.

Following Several Years Working In The United States With Thomas A Edison, Mr A R Harris Returned To New Zealand In 1912 To Set Up Business In Christchurch Marketing Edison Storage Batteries And Associated Equipment. The Company Commenced Operations In Dundas Street On A Site Occupied By Smith’s City Market. The Decision To Operate From Christchurch Was Prompted Primarily By The Completion, At That Time, Of The Lake Coleridge Hydro Station.

The Company’s Main Business Since 1912 Has Been The Marketing Of Electrical And Industrial Equipment Mostly Imported From Overseas And Later Involving The Local Assembly And Manufacture Of Goods Which Were In Restricted Supply Due To Import Licensing And Other Factors.

In Addition To The Importation Of Edison Batteries And Other Electrical Equipment, The Company Became Involved, Around 1925, In The Establishment Of Four Ya Radio Stations In Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch And Dunedin. Company Operation Of These Stations Continued Until The Broadcasting Service Was Taken Over By The Government In 1932.

During The 1930’s The Company Became One Of The Major Importers And Distributors Of Radios And Electrical Appliances In New Zealand Until This Was Brought To An Abrupt End By The Introduction Of Import Licensing In 1935.

In The Early 1940’s The Company Moved To Premises On The Corner Of Manchester And St. Asaph Streets And Established A Manufacturing Unit There. The Company’s Business Expanded Rapidly Into The Field Of Electric Motors, Electrical Instruments And Home Appliances. Expansion Of The Manufacturing Unit Led To The Purchase, In 1966, Of A Three Acre Site On Blenheim Road, Where The Manufacturing Unit Was Moved In 1967.

During 1972, The Opening Of The New Office Block And Warehouse On Blenheim Road Completed The Fourth Major Move Of Ar Harris Company Limited In 60 Years Of Steady Growth.

In Mid 1990 The Company Prepared Itself For Another Move To Be Closer To Its Customers. It Moved Its Operations To Bates Building, 136-138 Worcester Street, Which Incidentally Is Less Than A Kilometre From The Old Ar Harris Broadcasting House And The Old Ar Harris Manchester Street Building.
